Afroboogie are the combined efforts and talents of Nelson Moreira (Dj/Producer/Label manager) and Neil Ward (Producer/ Engineer) both originally from Johannesburg, South Africa. Together, they have been producing since 2000 and the partnership keeps getting stronger with every release and support amongst some of the worlds top players has been phenomenal over the last year and it seems there is no stopping them.
Since 1989 Nelson has been at the forefront of the dance scene in South Africa having headlined with and supported the world’s biggest names on the big stages as well as having released a number of mix compilations. At first, playing all night sets at some of Johannesburg’s premier clubs then moving onto the early raves when parties were being held in unused warehouses to the bigger commercially marketed events such as Ministry of Sound, Cream, Womad, ICE and Mother parties to name few.
With all this going on and a gig schedule taking him to all corners of the country he established himself as a talented and confident DJ, playing at major events with audiences of up to 20 000 people.
Neil Ward at this time was locked away in his home studio deciphering the technical side of synths and samplers and honing his now well worthy production skills. From being a guitarist in a punk rock band to eventually an electronic music producer always trying to outdo himself when it comes down to the technical side, in few words, Neil is a gear-head of note with an appetite for knowledge that is only surpassed by his desire to make great music.
Nelson and Neil have since then relocated to Europe and the UK respectively to get closer to the action and the industry.
After a few releases on the Ministry of Sound US label and Whoop! they decided to put their efforts into starting up a label so that they could develop their own unique style of Tribal/ Progressive and Tech style house music and release it to the masses, this is how Afroboogie Recordings was born. The label is moving from strength to strength with every release and getting more noticed within the Dj elite circles releasing tracks under various guises like Afroboogie & Voodoo People.
The release of the label introduced the underground sound of Johannesburg to the world, exposing the South African club scene internationally. The releases impress with a wide variety of elements including deep, haunting basslines, percussion and energy for the international dancefloors.
